François-Hubert Drouais (1727-1775) painted the mistress of Louis XV in the last year of his life. The Marquise de Pompadour (1721-1764) was a true patron of Arts and Letters. The simple "Robe à la Française" worn for this painting is composed of a silk fabric painted with garlands of oriental-influenced flowers, adorned with French embroidery and trimmed with ribbons.
The canvas is signed and dated on the work table begun in April 1763. The head is painted on a rectangle of canvas inserted into the painting. She was probably caught on the spot. The rest of the picture was completed in May 1764, a month after his death. Drouais' painting is the last of his many portraits by some of the best-known painters of the time, including Boucher and Carle van Loo.
